Big performances from underclassmen Oakdale High swimmers at the 2010 Sac-Joaquin Section Championships in mid-May should translate into big varsity seasons for Mustang Aquatics in years to come.

The program saw six different top-16 placements from boys and girls relay squads and another six placers in individual events as the team rallied to a 16th place team scoring (101 points) overall out of 68 competing frosh/soph programs at Tokay High in Lodi.

Oakdale’s frosh/soph boys earned a 10th place finish at Sections after 68 points of work while the Mustang girls finished 24th.

Hank Walter, who will be a junior next school year, secured Oakdale’s best frosh/soph medal by snagging second in the 100-meter backstroke on a finals time of 57.15 seconds. Brandon Terwilliger was third best in consolation and 11th overall with a 1:00.32 time in the same event.

Incoming junior Neal Cadra (16th overall) made the consolation finals and wrapped up his year with a 1:07.39 mark in qualifying.

Ryan Jones made his first season a good one by claiming 16th overall at 2:16.38 in the 200 Individual Medley.

Oakdale’s 200 medley relay team ended fourth in finals competition after a 1:48.74 finish. The Mustang 200 free relay (16th) and 400 free relay (11th) teams placed as well.

Oakdale girls saw three relay teams reach the top 16. The 200 free relay team qualified ninth and held the same overall placing after a 1:46.92 time to win the consolation finals heat.

The 400 free relay team was 12th overall and fourth in consolation after a 3:57.39 final run. Oakdale’s 200 medley relay team was disqualified in the consolation finals to finish 16th as well.

Shelby Panter added a 13th place finish in the 500 free after a 5:40.72 swim while Stevie Cordoza ended 16th in the 100 breast at 1:12.34.

Some Mustang swimmers will break in the new aquatic center with Oakdale’s water polo programs in the fall. The rest will look to snare improved times for coach Russ Van Cleave and the spring swim season in 2011.
