Five games into the season Oakdale High’s varsity softball team has already seen some intense battles and narrow decisions.
The team rebounded from a 2-1 loss to Enochs to open the season with a 2-1-1 run through the Ceres Bulldog Classic Tournament at Rainbow Fields in Riverbank.
Oakdale opened tournament action on Friday with a 2-1 rout of Division I Beyer after a nine strikeout one-hitter (one walk) from Brianna Parker. Parker also went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk while Danielle Onken smacked an RBI double and Marissa Toy scored with a stolen base.
Later that day, Oakdale played to a 1-1 tie against Franklin. Alanna Jones tossed four and 2/3 innings from the hill with three hits allowed. Toy (base hit, two stolen bases) and Parker (RBI double) came through at the plate.
Oakdale unloaded on Patterson in the following game with an 11-1 tally. Toy was 1-for-3 with two runs, two triples and two RBI while Parker (2-for-4, home run), Shelby Reali (3-for-4, three RBIs), Jones (1 for 1, two runs, stolen base) and Jenny Rissetto (1 for 1, two runs) had big days at the plate. Reali tossed four innings with one hit allowed and eights strikeouts.
“We finally saw the offense we know we have,” Oakdale coach Larry Loger said. “Shelby pitched well in her varsity debut.”
Oakdale closed tournament action with a tough 6-1 loss to Buhach Colony on Saturday after three Mustang errors and four earned runs surrendered by Parker (11 strikeouts).
“We had already faced Buhach in a scrimmage and had played well against them,” Loger said. “They hit some of Brianna’s best pitches, so you just tip your hat and move on. We played some good teams in the tournament, and know it will help us get ready for our league.”
Oakdale hosted returning Division V champions, Escalon, on Tuesday, though results were not available at press time.
